So much of our journey in wellness starts with putting down things that are hurting us and picking up the helpful tools, food, and maintenance items that we need to equip ourselves with, in order to live our best lives. Just as drinking water is an important part of your daily routine, so should be detoxing oneself so your interstitial fluid can properly bathe the cells and remove waste products to be filtered by the kidneys. Thank you, Kimberly for reminding us to self nurture and for being a shining light to any reader of ours, and especially to those who may be struggling.
What to Know When Considering Alternative Addiction Treatments
There is a reason people are calling addiction an epidemic: a recent survey found about half of American adults have a close friend or family member who is either an active or recovering addict. With those kinds of numbers, it’s impossible to say there is one kind of treatment option that works for everybody. While some people need intensive inpatient or residential treatment, it doesn’t work for everybody’s lifestyle and budget.
Fortunately, there are alternative recovery methods that people struggling with addiction can choose. First, anyone struggling with addiction should seek advice from a doctor. Ask your general physician if he or she is comfortable discussing drug or alcohol abuse screening and treatment options. If your doctor is not able to, request a referral to a doctor with the expertise to help you. When talking to your doctor, prepare a list of questions that you want to ask and the types of alternative treatments you are considering.
Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) Therapy
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a coenzyme that is derived from niacin (vitamin B3) which is essential for energy production and helps increase cognitive function. In large doses, NAD+ therapy can help people detox and recover from addictions to substances including opiates, benzodiazepines, alcohol, cocaine, suboxone, and methadone. NAD+ therapy mostly helps the physical side effects of addiction and withdrawal and should be used in conjunction with talk therapy to help identify the underlying emotional and mental causes while creating healthy coping mechanisms.
Neurofeedback therapy uses electroencephalography (EEG) sensors to observe brain activity. The subject interacts with his or her brain waves in order to alter them and impact their frequency. Neurofeedback can help with relapse triggers like anger or insomnia by decreasing states of arousal—the lower the brain wave frequency, the calmer the brain. Neurofeedback therapy is new to the scene and needs further testing to prove its efficacy.
Meditation and Mindfulness
Meditation is widely considered a useful tool for people struggling with addiction. It is used as a supplemental therapy in 12-step programs as well as other addiction treatments. Practicing meditation helps people gain awareness regarding their thoughts and feelings. The more aware you are of your emotions, the better you are at controlling them. Meditation is proven to help regulate the body’s levels of cortisol (the hormone related to stress), improve the immune system, and assist in detoxing mood-altering chemicals in the body. There are many different types of meditation, all of them appropriate for helping addicts in recovery.
Yoga combines physical postures, breathing, and meditation to help people align their mind, body, and spirit while promoting a state of inner peace. Like meditation, it is widely regarded as an appropriate alternative addiction treatment when used in conjunction with other therapies. Yoga helps increase awareness in the body and mind. Addicts often disassociate from the body through their substance of choice. Reconnecting allows addicts to recognize outdated behavioral patterns and control them as they go forward.
Swimming is a low-impact workout that helps promote inner peace. Simply being near water helps activate slower brain waves and promotes a sense of inner calm. Combined with the benefits of exercise, swimming is an effective therapy that helps treat addiction when combined with other therapies.
Millions and millions of Americans suffer from substance addiction. While some people need intensive inpatient treatment, others can successfully break their dangerous habits while continuing their normal lives. Before seeking treatment, addicts should consult their doctor regarding alternative therapies. While treatments including NAD+ therapy, neurofeedback, meditation, yoga, and swimming are helpful, they are not the only option and may need supplemental treatments for successful recovery.
